This is not a martial arts book, but a metaphor that
takes you on a journey to becoming a mature maker of
disciples. Throughout history, whether it was God sending
judges to His people to help restore them out of decades
of rebellion, or a sports team hiring a new GM to restore
them to former glory, the running theme has always been,
“We have to get back to the foundations and basics.” The
prophet Jeremiah tells us, “Thus says the Lord: “Stand by
the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where
the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your
souls…” (Jer. 6:16 ESV). This is an underpinning to the very
foundational thing that Jesus has commissioned all of us
to do—MAKE DISCIPLES, THAT CAN MAKE DISCIPLES,
THAT CAN MAKE DISCIPLES! – Dr David Jeremiah – Senior Pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church

As a former member of the military, I found discipline
to be key to my success. I needed it to stay fit, maintain
the skillsets I learned, follow, lead, and, most importantly,
accomplish the missions set before me. Now, four years
removed from the military and functioning as a spiritual
leader in my community and home, I find discipline even
more important, especially as it relates to spirituality. My
good friend and brother in Christ, Gino Mingo, breaks
down the essence of discipleship in a unique and concise
way involving a martial arts belt system. He takes you on
an amazing and suspense-filled journey where the lessons
of discipleship and discipline are beat into you. What will
come out is an ultimate spiritual warrior prepared for any
foe that comes your way. I want to encourage you to show
up to Gino’s Dojo through Black Belt Discipleship; you won’t
regret the visit. – Remi Adeleke – Writer, Producer, and Former Navy Seal

Gratitude. I imagine this will be your overwhelming
response to Gino Mingo’s masterful book, Black Belt
Discipleship. Gratitude to the Father, for saving us and
calling us into a life well-lived. Gratitude to yourself, for
taking the steps to move closer to the One who gave you
breath. And gratitude to the author, for laying down a
path to follow.
Once I started reading this guide to discipleship, I was
captured. First, it envisions and equips you to live a life
“transformed by intimacy,” by being found daily in God’s
presence. Then it offers a roadmap for your daily walk
and the tools to persevere through shortcomings and
challenges as you move ever closer to the Author and
Perfecter of your faith. Remember, it is not just a race to
finish, but a journey through which to grow.
Ultimately, you move from being a disciple to a disciplemaker;
one who can look to others and, like Paul, say
“follow me as I follow Christ.” One who, like Timothy, can
entrust the Gospel to the faithful whom God develops into
the able.
I’ve known Gino for nearly four decades. I stood next
to him when he married his bride and I’ve watched
him personally be transformed from one submitting to
spiritual authority to one who leads others through those
same steps. It’s time for you to earn your belt! – AC Green – NBA Pro Athlete

The word Christian is only mentioned three times in
the Bible. The word disciple is mentioned more than
250 times! The law of repetition tells us that the more
something is repeated the greater of importance it is. Let’s
be clear, Jesus never called his companions “Christians.”
He called them disciples.
Gino Mingo’s, Black Belt Discipleship (BBD) is not just
a discipleship manual for those who seek to become
committed disciples of Jesus Christ, but is a manual
to make “disciple-makers” who will in-turn, do the
same. Mingo reveals the “early Christians” were not
only followers of “The Way” — as in “the way, the truth
and the life” — but Christ instructed, his soon-to-be
apostles, very much like a sensei runs a dojo: I do, you
watch; you do, I correct, and repeat. This “way” of
training, or transformation, is antithetical to our Western
understanding of teaching; you talk, I take notes, ask
questions, and take a quiz.
BBD walks you through the hands-on process of spiritual
development which can only be done relationally,
transforming a follower, (literally) one who follows or
comes after another, into a disciple — one is disciplined in
the teachings of another; especially one who then teaches
others.
This process of a “disciple-maker making disciplemakers”
truly matures the body of Christ and
exponentially grows lasting and self-replicating fruit
that remains. Black Belt Discipleship requires that you
“discipline your body like an athlete” (1 Cor. 9:27, NLT).
It demands that you must engage in “cross-training”
everyday by “picking up your cross” to follow Him in his
dojo. While it is easy to spot an athlete, soldier, or fighter
by how they look, it should be just as easy to spot a disciple
of Jesus Christ by how he or she lives their lives.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. I believe
the problem we have today is too many undisciplined
“Christians” whom, upon witnessing how they live, you
would never know they were believers– hence they are
poor witnesses. Ultimately, it is not the uncommitted
masses of Christians who change the world, it is the
disciplined, committed few. Welcome to the dojo of Christ! – Lakita Wright Vice President, Urban Outreach Foundation
